Factary
As a media educator at Factary, a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering young people through media literacy, I have conducted more than ten workshops for over 150 students in various schools around Nuremberg, focusing on discerning fake news and evaluating information online. Factary's mission is to engage people in understanding the media's role in democracy and the pitfalls of misinformation, utilizing a scientifically-backed, evidence-based communication approach.
In these workshops, my role involves guiding students through interactive sessions where they learn to critically analyze online information. Each workshop follows a structured format, beginning with an introduction to the history of fake news and information reliability. Students then engage in group activities, where they apply these concepts by evaluating real-world examples. This hands-on approach not only educates them about the dangers of misinformation but also equips them with practical skills to navigate the digital world responsibly.
The prevalence of internet use among teenagers is staggering, with our surveys indicating that the average 14-year-old spends more than six hours a day online. This high level of engagement underscores a pressing need for digital skills for not just young people, but for all of us. No one is immune to misinformation, making it crucial to develop a keen sense of discernment and critical thinking.
My ongoing collaboration with Factary is a testament to our shared commitment to this cause. We are always seeking to expand our reach and impact through further collaborations. If you are interested in joining this effort, please feel free to contact me.
